Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs are a relatively new and creative way of connecting local farmers with local consumers and being part of the larger movement to support local farms in one’s community. We’re excited about our CSA program at Mohala Farms, and are looking forward to growing it into one of the largest and most important, direct outlets of our fresh organic produce to our friends and family around the island. Here are the main outlines of our program:
The Big Picture
Creates a direct relationship between you and the person/people growing your food.
You subscribe and invest in the farm – pay in advance and include a small annual fee.
Become more connected to the farm – invitations and opportunities to come for special events, farm-to-table dinners, seasonal celebrations and volunteer days.
And of course, receive a weekly supply of fresh, nutrient-rich organic produce for your enjoyment.
The Logistics
Food baskets are provided once a week at a convenient location in town (Church of the Crossroads, on University Avenue in Mo’ili’ili.)
Pick-up time will be on Thursdays, 4:30 – 6:00 pm.
Food baskets come in two sizes: Small ($20) and Large ($30).
The Produce
Produce will include a diverse supply of what is growing and in season at our farm.
All produce is 100% organic -- all our practices comply with and exceed federal organic standards.
We will customize your boxes if there are certain foods that you are growing yourself or which you strongly dislike.
We are continually experimenting with various crops and are open to your suggestions.
We will be providing recipes at least once a month on produce we are currently growing (and would love to get and share your recipes and cooking ideas as well!)
We are currently growing collard greens, a variety of different kale, green beans, arugula, some lettuces and specialty greens, tatsoi and other asian greens, turnips and radishes, okra, parsley, cilantro, chives, oregano, mint, thyme, lilikoi, banana, papaya, lemons, limes and avocados. Their supply does change, so not all of these are always available.
Payments
Annual fee is $25 and helps to cover cost of tote bags, seeds, gas and other expenses.
Subscription in the CSA program is for a minimum of 3 months.
You pay the full amount (all 3 months) at the beginning of the period. If this is not possible, you may pay on a monthly basis, at the beginning of each month.
Payments can come by check or cash. A paypal account is being formed and will be on our website (once completed) by the end of October.
Cancellations & Out of Town Pick Ups
If you are out of town or can’t pick up your basket, you are encouraged to ask a friend or family member to pick up your basket and enjoy it themselves.
If you are not able to arrange for an alternative pick-up, we will allow up to 2 credits for each 3 month period (we will not pack a box for you and will deduct this amount from your next 3 month payment period).
If you miss your pickup during our pickup hours, your food basket will be donated to a local homeless shelter (IHS, River of Life, etc.)
Prepared Foods
You are invited to request any of our prepared food items that we have as an additional purchase with your weekly basket.
Orders need to be placed by Tuesday for additional prepared foods.
Current prepared foods include: Raw Kale Salad, Almond Nut/Sesame Pate, Papaya Spice Cake, Lilikoi Mochi.
Payments for these items will be at time of pick-up, or through paypal once this is setup.
Please let us know if you are interested in participating with us in this program by email or by phone (Kathy at (808) 988-7374 or Mark at (808) 478-8469). Many thanks for your support thus far!
